Bonding and stoichiometry
Students will be presented with various classes of compounds that illustrate the different types of bonds, eg. ionic, covalent and then develop models to describe the structure and bonding that characterise materials found in nature. They will also examine intermolecular forces and the chemical and physical properties that are influences by them.
This unit also considers the quantities of materials consumed and produced in a chemical reaction. To understand chemical stoichiometry, students will develop an understanding of the system of atomic masses and the composition of chemical compounds. Students will be able to calculate chemical quantities using mass and volume relationships in solids, solutions and gases involved in reactions.
